Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies in 7th and 10th position respectively in wet conditions in Assen

After a short break, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team resumed action in Assen (Netherlands) for the fourth round of the World Superbike Championship. In different weather conditions compared with the previous round in Spain, with temperatures slightly above 10 degrees and a nonstop rain, Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies concluded the first day of practice in 7th and 10th position respectively, separated by less than a tenth of a second (Alex Lowes posted the provisional best lap with a 1:52.701).

The 2016-spec factory Panigale R thus debuted in the wet, and both Giugliano and Davies significantly improved their lap times throughout the day (taking four and three seconds off respectively since FP1, during which the Welshman crashed out without consequences) but, as the rain unexpectedly intensified during the final minutes, they were not able to take advantage of the improving track conditions.

Pronti a correre ad Assen

After taking a double victory in Aragon (Spain) with Chaz Davies, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team will head to Assen (Netherlands) for the fourth round of the World Superbike Championship. Both Davies and Davide Giugliano, who finished the races in Aragon in fifth and sixth position, enjoy riding in the Dutch track, which will host the production-based series for the 25th year. Davies took two second-place finishes last year while Giugliano, who skipped the round in 2015 due to injuries, brought the Panigale R on the third step of the podium in the previous season.

The TT Circuit, characterized by a radically different layout compared with the Aragon Motorland track, also represents a good benchmark to further evaluate the technical upgrades recently developed in Borgo Panigale and cut back the gap in the general standings, where Davies and Giugliano currently sit in second (105 points) and fifth (56 points) position respectively. In conjunction with a test already scheduled by the development team in Mugello, the squad also took the chance to take it to the track with Davide Giugliano, who thus utilized one of the eight private-test days allocated to permanent riders during the championship to solve the issues encountered in Spain.

Chaz Davies, who took the first, historic victory of the Panigale R in WSBK in Aragon last year, competed constantly at the front, posting the best lap during FP1 and closing the day in second position, 0.375 seconds behind the provisional best lap posted by Tom Sykes with a 1:50.712.

However, both Davies and Giugliano managed to make significant strides throughout the day.

Davies took eighth place in the provisional standings, 0.832 seconds behind current leader Michael Vd Mark (who posted a best lap of 1:34.629). Giugliano closed the opening day right behind his teammate, in ninth position (+0.850).

The race itself was similar to the one held on Saturday, with a tight group fight in which both Giugliano and Davies showed their grit. Due to a fortuitous contact between Giugliano and Sykes with six laps to go, Davies and Rea were able to create a small gap.

Second place in Phillip Island with Chaz Davies, while Davide Giugliano misses the podium by only si

The World Superbike Championship kicked off the 2016 season in a spectacular fashion in Phillip Island. After a hard-fought Superpole, with Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies in second (+0.078) and ninth (+0.697) position respectively, Race 1 was decided only in the final meters. Thanks to a scorching start, Davies quickly recovered the gap and reconnected with his teammate Giugliano at the front.

The two Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team riders then engaged in a tough yet fair battle with Jonathan Rea and Michael Vd Mark, consistently lapping in the high 1:31 mark and progressively pulling away from the group.

After a brief, non-belligerent phase at half race distance, the four forced the pace further with five laps to go, with Davies right behind Rea and Giugliano quickly in tow, trying to recover the few tenths he lost due to a small mistake in turn 4.

The Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team works on race pace in Phillip Island

After having focused on confirming the 2016 Panigale R base setup in the two-day test earlier this week, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team took to the track once again in Phillip Island for the first official practice sessions of the season. Given the new format – which splits the races between Saturday and Sunday (both at 3 p.m. local time, 5 a.m. CET) – the team prioritized consistency over the race distance, working at length with used tyres to evaluate their performance on a historically demanding track.

Davide Giugliano finished in seventh position in the combined time sheets (+0.662 behind Sylvain Guintoli, who set the provisional best lap with a 1:30.865), taking three tenths of a second off his personal best in between sessions, and trying the new rear-tyre options brought by Pirelli specifically for this track.

Testing is over, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team is ready to start the 2016 season in Phillip Isla

After a first day of pre-season tests characterized by grey skies and intermittent rain, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team hit the track again in Phillip Island in radically different climatic conditions. The air temperature rose to as much as 38 degrees (41 Cº on the tarmac) and, in combination with strong winds, it made it progressively more difficult to find pure speed. To this end, both riders focused on race distance, and more specifically tyre wear on the notoriously demanding Australian track.

Davide Giugliano (85 laps overall) still managed to improve his lap times by four tenths of a second, finishing third in the combined time sheets, 0.303 seconds behind leader Tom Sykes. Chaz Davies, still slightly sore after yesterday’s crash...

Light rain hampers Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team’s last pre-season tests in Phillip Island

With a few days to go before the World Superbike 2016 season opener, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team took it to the track once again in Phillip Island (Australia) for the traditional, two-day test together with all the other teams and riders. Despite the warm temperatures, light rains hindered the team’s program, focused on consistency and competitiveness over the race distance in light of the latest upgrades to the engine, chassis and electronics of the Panigale R, which had already received a positive feedback in Portimão and Jerez last January.

With the top riders separated only by a small margin, Chaz Davies (who crashed out without injuries in the final minutes) and Davide Giugliano closed in ninth and tenth position, respectively 0.581 and 0.713 seconds behind leader Tom Sykes, who posted a best lap of 1:31.097.

After the first tests of 2016 in Portimão last week, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team carried on with its program with two days on track in Jerez de la Frontera, the last ones before flying to Australia for the season opener.

Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies clocked 110 and 126 laps respectively on the Panigale R, moving forward with the development in its 2016 specifications. Once again, the team focused its work on chassis and electronics. Davies and his technicians were nevertheless able to begin part of the planned work programme with the Panigale R in its 2016 configuarion.

Fortunately conditions greatly improved for day two, allowing Davies and his mechanics, supported by Ducati SBK development staff, to complete almost all of the scheduled tasks. Work focused on the electronics and several engine updates that were welcomed by the Welsh rider.
